Youth In the City Chris Jalufka 9781320976084 Books Reviews
Dark, lyrical, snippets of vulnerability and ego in your characters. Thanks for sharing!
A very enjoyable read! Being a full time student, I don't have time (or energy) to leisurely read, but this was short and entertaining. It has it's dark moments but Chris writes in a way which make those moments palatable. I really enjoyed these short stories and would recommend it to anyone.
The title of the book, Youth in the City, very much conflicts with the cover of the book which immediately captures one attention. There is a huge castle/hotel with turrets seemingly hanging over a seaside cliff. There are children and adults dressed somewhat formally, as befitting the early twentieth century, wading along the water’s edge as the endless surf crashes to shore. The cover depicts a rugged coastline with nary a city in sight and there’s almost a magical Potteresque feel to the book cover which quickly invites the reader to jump right in. Youth in the City is a collection of vignettes and the first vignette is called, When It’s Summer, and aptly has as its setting, the seashore. It tells the tale of two young girls being pulled from the sea, both dead. Jalufka’s prose is somewhat clinical in its intent, allowing his readers to become voyeurs as someone in the gathering crowd makes a feeble attempt to resusitate the two children, both long gone. That same clinical detachment is apparent throughout the book and is used effectively by the author to separate himself (and his readers) from the scene, allowing us to observe without necessarily having to give of ourselves emotionally. Voyeuristic impact without the emotion. Most definitely effective.
A beautiful, lyrical danse macabre, filled with strange and lovely characters. Loved it.
I love love love collections of short stories and this book did not disappoint. I find it really interesting to read many different stories at once. Youth in the City was a great title for this book. My favorite story in the book was Common Static. It is about dreaming and sleeping. I really love how the author thinks that when you sleep there is no future in it and it is just a focus of the past. I really enjoyed this story and thought it was the best out of all of them, however, the others were very good too.
Abrupt and sweet like cotton candy surrounding razor blades, or maybe the other way round. It tasted like my first beer. Try it.
The brevity of the stories gives you just a taste of what's in the author's mind, like a Jolly Rancher hard candy.
A fast read but the stories resonate, lingering in the reader’s mind well after the prose is complete making Jalufka’s book more than worthwhile. The art accompanying this edition is equalling compelling.
